Why I Chose Chevron Flooring for My Dining Room and How It Survived

I have always admired chevron flooring in luxury hotels. The V-shaped pattern looks elegant and timeless. When I renovated my dining room, I decided to install chevron. But chevron is expensive and difficult to install. After one year, I can say it was worth every dirham. Here is my experience.

What Is Chevron Flooring?

Chevron flooring consists of planks cut at 45-degree angles at both ends. When installed, the planks form a continuous V shape. The pattern is different from herringbone, which uses rectangular planks in a zigzag. Chevron is more formal because the V points are perfectly aligned.

I chose chevron flooring dubai in engineered oak. The top layer is 4mm of real oak. The core is plywood for stability. The planks came pre-finished with a matte lacquer. I did not want to sand and finish on site because of the dust.

The cost was higher than straight plank flooring. I paid 350 AED per square meter for the material alone. Installation added another 150 AED per square meter. For a 30 square meter dining room, the total was 15,000 AED. That is expensive. But the result looks like a million dirhams.

Why Chevron Works in Dubai

The V-shaped pattern hides small gaps that appear as the floor expands and contracts. In straight plank floors, a 1mm gap between planks is visible. In chevron, the angled cuts make gaps less noticeable. The pattern also distracts the eye from any imperfections.

Engineered wood is essential for chevron in Dubai. Solid wood chevron would gap and cup within months. The plywood core in engineered wood resists movement. The oak top layer gives the real wood look. I also made sure the planks had a click-lock system, not glue-down. Floating floors handle expansion better than glued floors.

I left a 12mm expansion gap around the perimeter, covered by baseboards. I also installed a vapor barrier underlayment with a built-in moisture seal. The room is air-conditioned constantly. After one year, the floor has no gaps, no cracks, and no squeaks.

Installation Was a Nightmare

I am usually a DIY person. I did not attempt chevron installation. I hired a specialist. Even he struggled. Chevron requires perfect layout. The center line must be exactly straight. Each plank must be clicked in at the correct angle. If one plank is off by 1mm, the error multiplies across the room.

The installer spent one full day just on layout. He snapped chalk lines and dry-laid several rows to check alignment. He used spacers to maintain the expansion gap. The actual installation took two more days. For 30 square meters. That is slow.

The cuts were difficult. At the walls, each plank needed an angled cut on both ends. The installer used a miter saw with a fine-tooth blade. He wasted about 15% of the planks due to cutting errors. That is normal for chevron, but it means buy 20% extra material.

If you are considering chevron, budget for professional installation. Do not DIY. And expect the installation to take longer than any other floor type.

Matching Wooden Skirting to Chevron

I wanted the skirting to complement the chevron floor without competing. I chose wooden skirting in the same oak wood but with a simple square profile. The skirting is 150mm tall, painted white to match the walls. The contrast between white skirting and natural oak chevron looks crisp.

I did not use skirting that matches the floor color. That would have been too much wood. The white skirting frames the floor like a picture frame. It also hides the expansion gap perfectly.

The skirting installation required undercutting the door frames. The chevron planks need to slide under the door jambs. The installer used a jamb saw to cut the bottom of the frames. This is standard but time-consuming. Do not let anyone cut the planks around the jambs. That looks unprofessional.

Maintenance of Chevron Flooring

Maintaining chevron is the same as maintaining any engineered wood. I sweep daily with a soft brush. I use a vacuum with a hardwood floor attachment once a week. I never use a steam mop or wet mop. Water is the enemy of wood.

For spills, I wipe immediately. The lacquer finish protects for a few minutes, but standing water will seep into the joints. I keep a microfiber cloth in the dining room for this purpose.

Every two years, I will apply a refresher coat of lacquer. The manufacturer sells a specific product. I will do this myself. It involves cleaning the floor, applying the liquid with a pad, and waiting two hours to dry. No sanding required.

After one year, the floor has minor scratches near the dining chairs. That is unavoidable. But the pattern hides them. In a straight plank floor, scratches are more visible.

Oak Wood Flooring as an Alternative

If chevron is out of your budget, consider oak wood flooring in straight planks. Oak is hard, stable, and beautiful. Engineered oak planks cost around 150-200 AED per square meter. Installation is much simpler and cheaper.

I have oak straight planks in my bedroom. They look great but do not have the same wow factor as chevron. For a formal dining room or a grand entrance, chevron is worth the premium. For everyday spaces, straight planks are fine.

Would I Do It Again?

Yes. Every time I host a dinner party, guests comment on the floor. The chevron pattern draws the eye and makes the room feel larger. The quality of the engineered oak has held up perfectly. No gaps, no fading, no scratches that are visible.

But I would only recommend chevron to someone who understands the cost and complexity. It is not a DIY project. It is not a budget project. It requires patience and a skilled installer. If you have those things, chevron flooring will transform your home. If not, stick with straight planks or good quality tiles.
